The intelligent Connected Vehicle Testing and Assessment Technical Seminar (and Launching Ceremony of the Joint Research Center for Intelligent Vehicle Testing and Assessment) successfully held in Beijing

On May 18, 2018, China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd. held the intelligent connected vehicle testing and assessment technical seminar and the launching ceremony of the joint research center for intelligent vehicle testing and assessment in Beijing together with China Industry Innovation Alliance for the Intelligent and Connected Vehicles, Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Tongji University, original equipment manufacturers and internet companies at home and abroad. 

In China, the development of intelligent connected vehicle technology and industry is given high attention.In“Made in China 2025” formally issued by the State Council in May 2015, the intelligent connected vehicle is regarded as a key development direction.At the same time, intelligent connected vehicle is listed as one of the top-priority development goals in the “Three-Year Action Plan (2018-2020) on Promotion of the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Industry Development”, which was printed and issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in December 2017. The electrification, intelligence, connecting and sharing of automobile has become a global consensus and the development direction of automobile and transportation in the future. In this context, the successful holding of this conference is of great significance.

      Li Kaiguo, chairman of the board of China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd. (CAERI), presided over the meeting.He first introduced the major participating enterprises and research institutes and extended a warm welcome to the guests.He said that CAERI,as a member of the national intelligent transportation expert group, participated in and was responsible for drafting the national and local strategic planning and standards for intelligent transportation development: in 2015, CAERIhaddeveloped the abilityto test and evaluatethe international advanced ADAS (AdvancedDriver AssistantSystem); and, in November 2016, CAERI took the lead in the project of "i-VISTA Intelligent Vehicle Integrated Systems Test Area", which is jointly developed by the ministry and the city.However, with the improvement of vehicle intelligence level, it is more difficult tomake testing and assessment, so it is necessary to gather relevant research capabilities of the industry for collaborative tackling. He stressed that CAERI hopesto organize well-known experts and scholars in this field to explore generic testing and assessment technology through this seminar, and CAERI will set up ajoint research center for intelligent vehicle testing and assessment, by relying on its own technology and platform advantages, in order to provide all-round technical services for R&D and testing of intelligent connected vehicles. 
     Then, academician Li Jun, president of the ChinaAutomotiveEngineeringInstitute, addressed the conference.He pointed out that the global vehicleindustry has entered a new era of scientific and technological revolution and innovation-driven development.Key technologies, such as setting up of scene library, testing and assessment methods, development of testing equipment and big data platform  concerned with the intelligent connected vehicles,arean important factor restrictingthe development of intelligent connected vehicles and also a common problem that shall be solved in the whole industry. Europe, the United States and other countries have done a lot of work in this regard.For China, it is urgent to establish a set of intelligent connected vehicle testing and assessment system which is applicable for the whole industry and conforming toChinese driving environment.He acknowledged the importance of hosting the conference and advocating the joint research center and he believed that this would mobilize elites of the whole industry effectively.

Chen Tao, deputy director of the CAERIIntelligent Connected Vehicle Testing and R&D Center, introduced the "China Intelligent Vehicle Index and i-VISTA Application Demonstration".Deng Weiwen,professor of School of Transportation Engineering andScience of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, expert of the national "Thousand Talents program" and doctoral supervisor,delivered a report themed with the “Exploration of Key Technologies on Building of Scenes of Piloted Driving and Scene Library”. Liu Shengxiang, Manager of baidu, expressed the views from Internet industry through the report titled by “Apollo-Based Piloted Driving R&D and Testing State”. 

Deng Weiwen,professor of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, expert of the "Thousand Talents program" and doctoral supervisor, delivered a keynote report onexploration of key technologies for building of piloted driving oriented scene library.He pointed out that building of scene library is a key link for product positioning and quality assurance of intelligent connected vehicles, and playsan important role in development, design, research and testing.There are some limitations in the traditional scene building methods, and building of the simulation scenes can counter these deficiencies.

Zhu Xichan, professor of the School of Automobiles of TongjiUniversity and director of the Institute of Automotive Safety Technology, delivered a keynote report entitled "Testing and Assessment Methods of Piloted Driving Vehicles".He pointed out that there are differences between Chinese driving scenarios and those of foreign countries, so it is not feasible to directly use foreign standards, and it is necessary to independently develop the testing and assessment standards for intelligent connected vehicles with Chinese driving characteristics. Entry of vehicles in Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is taken as an example. There are a large number of such scenarios in China. Therefore, it is necessary to take this scenario into consideration during Chinese ACC design and testing. 

Later, the participants conducted a heated discussion on the topics, such as creating of the underlying intelligent vehicle testing and assessment joint research center that is jointly established and shared to boost rapid development of intelligent connected vehicle.Vice director Chen Tao proposedto jointly discuss, build and share the intelligent vehicle testing and assessment joint research center.

The intelligent vehicle testing and assessment research center consists of the expert technical committee, executive council and secretariat. It coordinates the determination of technical development direction, project demonstration and review, and assists enterprises to solve technical problems, etc.The main leaders are vice general manager XieFei (the chairman of the council), academician Li Jun (director of committee of experts), professorLi KeQiang (executive deputy director of committee of experts) and professor Zhu Xichan (secretary general of the secretariat).

The objective of theintelligent vehicle testing and assessment joint research center isjointly with major colleges and universities, original equipment manufacturers, travel service enterprises and internet enterprises,to collect the data, such as the driver-vehicle-road scenarios in different traffic environments, communication environment, vehicle motion state and drivers’ behaviors, to create typical Chinese traffic environment database and intelligent connected vehicle virtual simulation testing database; establish a testing and assessment system with Chinese characteristics to specify internationally influential testing and assessment standards and testing specifications; and, develop general and high-efficiency simulation testing and road testing tools and assist relevant national departments to monitor piloted driving operation and formulate laws and regulations, in order to provide theory, method and tool support for testing and assessment of intelligent connected vehicles in Chinese traffic scenarios.

Deputy director Chen Taosaid thatCAERI has the most comprehensive one-stop intelligence connected vehicle testing site at present. The company’sintelligent connected hardwarecan performtesting,from loop test platform to closed connected city mode and closed highway and rural simulation environment to open road, and providessystematic testing services of intelligent connected vehicle. At the same time, CAERI not only has the most complete intelligent connected vehicle test equipment in China, but also completes independent research and development and application of road test equipment by taking account ofactual testing requirements.

Based on the principle of joint discussion, development and sharing, members of the center will share rights and interests and undertake obligations as agreed, and will form a long-term and stable community of interestsof enterprises, universities and research institutes which will invest, share interests, bear risks and develop jointly. Based on the common development needs, members of the center jointly build and share the natural driving database, testing and assessment system and assessment tools, and jointly promote rapid development of Chinese intelligent connected vehicle technology.
