Chandler City Planning Looking to Streamline

There is an article out at AZCentral.com, Chandler weighs options to ease planning, talking about the City of Chandler and the City Manager wanting to streamline the approvals process for permitting and zoning.  The complaints are that the process is too burdensome and convoluted and often requires resources many small business owners and residents don't have in order to get a permit.

City Councilman, Jeff Weninger, cited that the process is difficult in Chandler and needs to be streamlined to make it easier to do business in Chandler.  The Assistant City Manager, Pat McDermott, is also looking at possibly bringing in a consultant to look at the process and make recommendations.

I think this is a great idea especially as it relates to small business owners.  Any time the process can't be easily worked through without hiring additional representation is an unfair burden.  However, there is a balance to be struck here.  It is important that streamlining doesn't mean that the City's oversight and coordination of new project proposals will go against the general City plan.  In other words, the City of Chandler has built great momentum for development in the community and to lax procedures to where businesses are able to establish that don't otherwise fit the long-term plan and vision of the community would be a mistake.

Having said that, this is a strong example of a City taking a close look at its own practices and how it does business and looking for ways to improve in order to help those in the community it serves.  I have always been impressed with Chandler's focus on economic development and this is just another example of Chandler keeping their eye on the ball with regards to city development but also not losing sight of the people and community they serve.
