Goodyear – Today

Recipient of the 2008 All-America City Award, the City of Goodyear is comprised of 116 square miles of land located in the West Valley and is located south and west of Avondale, south of Litchfield Park, and east of Buckeye. Goodyear is home to over 56,000 residents with projections of over 330,000 residents by 2030!

Located in the southern section of the West Valley, Goodyear features beautiful views of the Sierra Estrella Mountains.

As one of the larger municipalities in the Phoenix valley, Goodyear is well connected to the main transportation arteries. Interstate 10 bisects the city and allows for easy access to other parts of the Valley. The city’s proximity to metropolitan Phoenix and ability to locate transportation routes have led to Goodyear’s continued growth.

Goodyear will soon be Spring Training home of the Cincinnati Reds and already host the Cleveland Indians.

Goodyear – A History

Goodyear got its name from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which bought large parcels of land back in 1917 in order to grow cotton. Cotton was used in airplane tires for World War I and the purchase of 16,000 acres allowed Goodyear to grow an ample supply of cotton which was in short supply. The area soon became known as “Egypt” for the Egyptian cotton that was grown there.

Coincidentally, the executive that was sent to purchase the original land that Goodyear was founded on was Paul Litchfield (Litchfield Park).

After the war, Goodyear’s economy slowed considerably with the decline in cotton pricing. It wasn’t until the onset of World War II that the economy saw a revival. It was then that the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation and Litchfield Naval Air Facility began the production of dirigibles (blimps).

In 1949, Goodyear Aerospace Corporation was established in Goodyear. This was the beginning of a robust defense and aerospace industry would grow up and thrive in Goodyear. Eventually Loral Defense Systems would purchase Goodyear’s operations in Goodyear. Loral Defense Systems would later become Lockheed Martin.

Goodyear was incorporated in 1946 and became a city in 1985.
