El Mirage, Arizona - Today
The City of El Mirage is a small city just shy of 10 square miles in size located in the West Valley surrounded by other cities. Peoria is situated to the east of El Mirage, Surprise to the north, and Glendale and Avondale to the south. El Mirage is approximately 19 miles northwest of Phoenix. El Mirage had 33,583 residents in 2007, significant growth since the 2006 Census which pegged the number at just over 25,000 residents. El Mirage has seen tremendous growth in the last decade as interest in the city and new build construction came together.
El Mirage has several major community events it organizes annually including Founder’s Day. Residents of El Mirage enjoy relatively close access to Lake Pleasant which is due north of the city. White Tank Mountains Regional Park is located west of El Mirage. Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum.
Though incorporated as a city, El Mirage still has that small town feel with a strong sense of community. The city is focused on economic growth and is working hard to attract new businesses and opportunities for positive growth. Celebrating El Mirage’s immigrant roots are events such as Founder’s Day with its carnival, parade, fiesta, and music (held in March), Cinco De Mayo, and Fiesta Patrias (September) which help to bring the city’s residents together.

The City of El Mirage has very simple roots when in 1937 migrant farmers found El Mirage as an attractive home to live for their children. El Mirage’s origins are largely agricultural though other industry, including heavy industry, has grown in the town over the decades. Home construction has been a significant driver for the local economy in the past several years as well. El Mirage incorporated in 1951.

El Mirage, like other Valley cities more on the outskirts such as Queen Creek, Maricopa, Avondale, Buckeye and others, saw explosive new home growth in the last decade. This is because El Mirage was perceived as an affordable housing market. For comparison, the 2000 Census recorded 7,609 residents in El Mirage versus the 33,000 today!
El Mirage represents a very inexpensive housing market compared to other more established Valley destinations. This is largely due to proximity as El Mirage is further north/northwest of Phoenix. Though growth has been extensive, new home construction in the future is likely to maintain a more modest pace. Residents who live in El Mirage likely work in neighboring cities such as Sun City. Luke Air Force Base is another major employer in the area.
El Mirage has a lot to offer its residents and is one of the most unique cities in the Valley with its preservation of its small town feel and wonderful cultural and historical heritage.
