Ahwatukee, Arizona - A History
Ahwatukee's original roots date back to the Native Americans who lived and farmed the land there. In 1921, Dr. W.V.B. Ames and his wife is said to have purchased 2,000 acres on the southeast side of South Mountain and built a home there. The home would later be called the "Casa de Suenos" or "House of Dreams." This was translated into a Native American language which many believe to be the root name of Ahwatukee. However, there is debate that the name "Ahwatukee" in the Crow language actually means "land in the next valley" which would reference the unique placement of the Ahwatukee area.
The development of Ahwatukee into a thriving city then starts with the purchase of large amounts of land by the Presley Development Company. The company surveyed and subdivided the land to become what Ahwatukee is today, a popular village of the Phoenix area. An interesting note: The Presley Development Company was run by Elvis Presley's uncle!
